Danny was a special gift to us all. Though he was not a biological member of the family, he was our son, our brother, our nephew, and our friend. He came into our lives when he was just 7 days old. At that time we had no idea he was addicted to heroin, abused, and abandoned by his mother. We just knew he needed a home and we were willing to provide one. As days turned into months, Danny's story began to unfold and we were told to just love on him for he would not see his first birthday. Well, he made it to his first birthday and enjoyed another 39 more. I have no doubt he survived all of these years because of all of you. You gave him the best gift anyone could ever give someone, you gave him unconditional love. Love so powerful that it kept him persevering through even his most difficult days. When you think about it, how did Danny make such a lasting impression on so many of us when he never spoke a single word? I truly believe it all started with his big brown eyes and his warm smile. Throughout his life, he spoke to us in so many other ways. He taught us that communicating with those you love on a regular basis is important. (Daily calls to Uncle Paul or Portal Calls to anyone who would listen.) He taught us to never forget to say hello or goodbye when leaving. That life is more than just work, that you are allowed to be silly and laugh. (Wearing wrapping paper on your head after you open a gift.) Danny showed us that work is rewarding and should make you smile. (Bringing in formula or firewood each morning.) But most of all he taught us what it is like to love.
