Obituary of Donald Eugene Stevens

Of Flint, age 91, died Saturday, September 29, 2012 at his home. The funeral service will take place 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at Martin Funeral Home. Pastor Patrick Poag will officiate with burial to follow in Meadowview Memorial Gardens. Family will be present to receive friends on Monday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to McLaren Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Gene was born November 13, 1920 in Flint, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant and Viola (Smith) Stevens. Educated locally, he attended Flint Central High School before joining the Army Air Force and serving his country for five years. He and Shirley Ann were united in marriage on December 19, 1943 and were married for 68 years. Gene enjoyed fishing, bird hunting, fixing things, watching Wheel of Fortune, and most of all, spending time with his family. He also liked listening to country music and was know to say, "If it isn't country, it isn't music." Left to cherish his memory are wife, Shirley Ann Stevens; children, Jeanne and husband Carl Phillpotts, Patricia Bell-Irelan and husband Floyd, Thomas and wife Jacqualine Stevens; son-in-law Ron (Gerre) Derus; grandchildren, Sandy, Ken, Jason, Scott, Stacy, Sarah, Valerie, Jeff, Amanda; 12 great- grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren, and sister, Jacqueline (James) Monroe. Sadly, Gene was preceeded in death by his daughter, Susan Derus; his parents, and three brothers, Glenn, Grant Jr., and Earl.
