Obituary of George Robert Smith
George Robert Smith, 93, of Traverse City, passed away on December 19, 2022. He was born on May 27, 1929, to Bert Smith and Minerva Hempstead. Educated locally, George graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1947.
He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley D’Arcy on October 20, 1951. Shirley has been his wife and best friend for 71 years. George proudly answered his country’s call and enlisted in the United States Army in 1947. He served through the Korean War as an electrician. Upon his return to civilian life, George worked for General Motors at AC Sparkplug for 40 years until his retirement in 1987. George was a kind, loving man with a dry sense of humor. He loved taking care of plants and trees and working in his yard. He will be dearly missed.
Left to cherish George’s memory are his beloved wife, Shirley; daughter, Pamela Smith and husband Gerald Griffus; grandchildren, Wendy and husband Steve Signourney, Daniel and wife Stephanie Smith, Amy and husband Greg Smith-Hath; great-grandchildren, Garrett, Peyton, Gracyn, Andrew; great-great-grandchild, Lyela.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Craig Smith, and his sisters: Betty Baryo and Evelyn Alm.
A funeral service will be held at Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at 2:00 pm. George’s family will be present to receive friends from 11:00 am until the time of service at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be considered to the American Heart Association.
