Lela was born in Flint, Michigan, on August 25, 1956, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George and Margaret (Histed) Bailey. She graduated from Northwestern High School with the Class of 1974. Lela met, fell in love with, and was married to the love of her life, Robert Mitchell on July 27, 1978, in Flint at the Courthouse. In her younger years, Lela, her sister, and her brothers loved to build snow forts, and when she went inside, they would collapse the forts around her. She grew up driving from Flint to Nashville, Michigan, traveling the hills on the way there. Lela loved any reason to get the family together for cookouts, games, and other fun creative things she came up with. She loved Christmas, but she didn't know what to do for the grandkids this past year. Lela and her husband gave all the boys Glamour magazines and all the girls Do-It-Yourself magazines, stuffed with money in between the pages; they told them there was valuable information in between the pages. Lela had a great sense of humor and loved to do special things for her family. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader for 18 years and a Travel Soccer Coach for the Flint Steelers for over 10 years and a CANUSA coach. Her favorite teammates were the "Fab 5" which was a group comprised of herself and her four daughters. Lela did many things including walking the Crim race for over 10 years and the women’s annual tubing trip down the rifle river. She loved crafting, including ceramic painting, and had a craft business called L&R Created. Lela’s dogs were always an important part of her life. Lela enjoyed small things like bird watching, bird documenting, crafting, maintaining her goldfish pond, and feeding her goldfish. Most of all Lela loved spending time and caring for her daughters, grandchildren, and granddogs.

Lela leaves to cherish her memory, husband of 43 years: Robert Mitchell; four daughters: Linsey and Nick (Ross) Mitchell, KC and Tony Holliday, Alisha and Fred (Walsh) Mitchell, Chelsie and Avery (Andras) Mitchell; twelve grandchildren: Skylee, Royce, Ollionna, Dylenger, Dezarai, Zoey, Niomi, Jordan, Vanessa, Dominic, Adriana and, Foxx.; three siblings: Harold Bailey, Donald Bailey, Gwendlyn and husband, Ed Mitchell; her beloved dog: Harley; several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lela was preceded in death by her grandparents and her parents and beloved min pin: Zella Rose.
