Obituary of Robert Lee West

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

COVID-19 UPDATE: With the recent guidelines limiting the number of people to less than 25 at any gathering, we are asking that you consider other ways to help support family and friends during this difficult time as an alternative to attending a visitation or funeral.

It is always difficult saying goodbye to someone we love and cherish.

Robert Lee West was born on November 1, 1932.  He was the oldest of five brothers born to Herbert and Leah West. He served in the Korean War, married Inez May Schroder, the love of his life, and together they had three children: Philip, David, and Martha.  Bob and his brothers worked together with their dad in a family business called  "West & Sons," an excavation business from 1959-1976.  Later he became a truck driver.

His passion for serving God led him to serve people in whatever ways he could, here at Home and through missions in Haiti and Mexico, as well as helping with the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.  His love for the missions at Home led him to volunteer many hours at Covenant Hills camp, where he ended up living and working full time for eight years.  When he couldn't physically help others, that didn't stop him, as he began to knit baby hats for Hurley Hospital and children in India. He also had a love for creating things out of wood, which won him many ribbons and awards.  He made children's toys for his grandchildren and wood carvings that he loved to share with those around him.

He is having the most amazing Christmas ever with a whole new body.  What a gift!

We will see you again someday.

 Love,

Inez (wife), Philip, David, Martha (children), David Jr., Nicholas, Philicia, Laura, Paul (grandchildren), Austin, Tyler, Isabella, Keaton, Avery, Madizan, Austin Lee,  Wyatt, Levi, Brayden, Thomas (great-grandchildren), Penny West (sister-in-law) Those who preceded Bob were: Leah (mother), Herbert (father), Darwin (brother), Teala (sister-in-law), Merle (brother), Dorothy (sister-in-law) Gary (brother), Harold (brother) and Shirley (sister-in-law).

Bob was a member of the Clio New Covenant Free Methodist Church for many years and would be honored by any donations given to the Covenant Hills Church Camp to further their endeavor to share the lasting joy that God has made in his own life.

Bob passed away at the age of 88 on Friday, December 4, 2020, at home, with his wife by his side. In accordance with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private burial will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Pastor Daniel Shinabarger to officiate. Expressions of sympathy and memorial contributions to Covenant Hills Camp and Retreat Center may be placed on Bob’s tribute page at martinfuneralhome.com.

Bob’s obituary was lovingly written by his family.
