William (Bill) Somers, 76, of Port Orange, Florida, formerly of Mt. Morris, slipped quietly into heaven late in the evening of December 27, 2016, with his wife, Lyann (Sheldon) Somers, by his side. Bill graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1958. He was a proud United States Marine, joining after high school. He served for 52 months, mostly in Hawaii. After the Marines, Bill was employed at GMSPO in Swartz Creek for 28 years in International Sales. He was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Clio and surrounding areas. After retirement from GMSPO he participated in pre-Revolutionary War re-enactments. Bill was a member of the Richfield Rifles, the American Legion, the Eagles Club in Davison, and more recently the Eagles in Port Orange, Florida. He was also a member of the Plymouth Prowler Owners Association where he and Lyann enjoyed many friends and fun times. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty (Horton) Somers and son Steven Somers. He was the oldest son of Roderick Somers and Evelyn (Butler) Somers. In addition to Lyann, left to cherish his memory are sister Chari Hajek of Flushing, brother John and wife Terry Somers of Ypsilanti, Gigi and Sandy Somers of Kansas, son Jeff Somers of Kalamazoo, Sarah and Ron Whitehead of Mt. Morris, David and Mary Provost of Kansas, and grandchildren Joshua Somers, Mercedes Koelsch, Morgan Whitehead, Mina Whitehead, Deanna Provost, Vance Provost and Gavin Provost. He will be greatly missed by his friends on Seabird Island in Port Orange. Family was very important to Bill. He found it concerning, even hard to understand, when families didn’t get along or worse yet, didn’t speak. When one of his children needed a babysitter for a grandkid he’d always tell them “you come to me, the answer is always yes!” Always Faithful. Always Loyal. Semper Fi, Bill, Semper Fi. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 1:00pm, with Rev. Tom Wachterhauser officiating. Bill’s family will be present for visitation from 11:00am until the time of the service at Miles Martin Funeral Home, 1194 E. Mt. Morris Rd., Mt. Morris, MI. Donations may be made to: www.concordindy.org or www.fisherhouse.org Friends may share a memory with the family at the funeral home.
