Of Flint, age 92, died Sunday, August 1, 2010 at his home. The funeral service will take place 11:00am, Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris, with burial to follow in Great Lakes National Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the United States Navy. WalterAaas family will be present at the funeral home to receive friends on Wednesday, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Wednesday, at 4:00pm for a VFW memorial service conducted by VFW Post #1452, Gordon R. Bennett Post. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial contributions to the Mt. Morris Church of Christ or to VFW Post #1452, Gordon R. Bennett Post. Walter was born February 6, 1918 in Mt. Gilead, North Carolina the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert and Sarah (Morris) Morris. He and Joyce Gates were united in marriage May 7, 1999. She preceded him in death on March 29, 2008. Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 6 years. While in the Navy Walter was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, Port Lyautey, French Morocco and North Africa. Walter worked for Buick for 30 years before he retired and was a member of UAW local #599 and life time member of VFW Post #1452, Gordon R. Bennett Post and VFW Post #8684, Land-O-Lakes Post and Bluegrass Association. Walter enjoyed square dancing in his younger days in North Carolina, hunting and fishing, pitching horse shoes, needle point, spending time with his family and friends. Walter leaves to cherish his memory, four children; James (Rosemary) Morris, Keith (Jalyn) Morris, Gloria Back, Arlene (Rory) Ketchens, and their mother Lillie Schopieray; seven stepchildren; Charles Leaym, Nancy (Ken) Lee, Charles (Paula) Cosner, David (Rebecca) Cosner, Dana (Vicky) Cosner, Lori Keller, Brenda (Roger) Lawrence, seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Odell (Claudine) Morris, sister, Martha Lawrence, numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joyce and second wife Veronica; two sisters, Beatrice Hunsucker and Mary Hedrick.
