Age 93, of Flint, formerly of Clio, died December 29, 2019, at his home. A memorial service will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery, in Holly, on Monday, January 13, 2020, at 2 pm. Thurlow was born in Clio, on January 12, 1926, to Mr. and Mrs. Thurlow and Hazel (McDowell) Swihart. After graduation, Thurlow would defend his country in World War II with the United States Marine Corps. After returning home, he would meet his future wife, Carolyn Hazard. They married in Clio, in July of 1947. Together, they raised a family and were married for 61 years until she sadly passed away on May 17, 2009. In his early years, after the war, Thurlow owned an IGA store for 33 years. After operating his own grocery store, Thurlow went on to sell insurance for 29 years. He also operated a weekly advertiser until 1985. Passionate about helping others and volunteering, Thurlow devoted much of his retirement years to the Nehemiah Ministries in Flint. Thurlow is survived by his children: Cathryn Stevens and David and wife, Jan Swihart; grandchildren: David and wife, Misty Munro and Harmony Mecum; and great-grandsons: Caine Munro and Alex Bellor. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, parents, and his brother: Vernon Swihart.
