Mrs. Norma Jean Welsh was born to Rolfe B. and Myrtle M. Ovaitt in Lapeer, Michigan on November 1, 1922. She died in her home in Mesa, Arizona on October 29, 2009. NormaAaas family will receive friends at the Martin Funeral Home-Vassar on Monday, from 3:00pm until 8:00pm. On Tuesday, family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 10:00am and proceed to Riverside Cemetery for the committal service 11:00am. Norma Jean grew up in Lapeer, received her education degree from Michigan State College in 1944 and moved to Vassar, where she taught kindergarten until 1953. She married Glenn L. Welsh on June 11, 1949. They moved to Arizona in 1973, returning to the Vassar area in the summer for 34 years. She loved being a mom to her daughter and twin sons. She was a substitute teacher and parent volunteer in the Vassar schools after they were born. Norma Jean was very active in the Methodist Church, playing the organ and piano and singing in the choir. Her music involvement continued in her church choir in Arizona. She was an outgoing and caring friend to many, and a fun-loving grandma to her two grandchildren. Most of all, she was the loving life partner of 60 years to her husband. She supported him in every way, including his work, love of flying, water-skiing and learning to scuba dive. Norma Jean is survived by her husband Glenn, daughter Kay Ellen and her husband David Walden, son David and his wife LaDonna, all of Mesa, and son Don of Los Angeles. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Angie and husband Ray De Lange of Guadalajara, Mexico, grandson 2Lt USA Mark Walden of Amberg, Germany, seven nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law and lifelong dear friends. Memorials may be made to the AlzheimerAaas Research Foundation.
