Miles Martin

January 24, 1945 — May 20, 2016

Age 71, of Mt. Morris, died Friday, May 20, 2016, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 am, Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Rev. Fr. Thomas Nenneau will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery with Graveside Military Honors. Family will be present to receive friends at the Miles Martin Funeral Home on Sunday from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Monday from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. On Monday evening, family, friends and parish will gather at the funeral home for a Rosary, Knights of Columbus Service and 4th Degree Chalice Ceremony beginning at 6:00 pm. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Martin will be taken to church to lie in state from 10:00 am until the time of Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to St. Mary’s School. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church. Miles “Tom” was born January 24, 1945 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Miles B. and Mildred C. (Doyle) Martin. He attended and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Mt. Morris with the Class of 1963. As a young man, he heeded the call of his country, serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Miles “Tom” was a combat medic and lab and surgery technician with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade in Bien Hoa, Vietnam from 1967-1968. He was also a Member of the American Legion Post #4285 and VFW Post #397. He and Darnell Ann Halpin were united in marriage May 31, 1969, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Upon his return to civilian life, he would go on to attend and graduate from Flint Junior College and Wayne State University, College of Mortuary Science with the Class of 1971. In 1971, Miles “Tom” would purchase Miles Martin Mortuary in Mt. Morris from his parents and in 1996, he and Darnell would purchase the Clark Funeral Homes in Vassar and Fairgrove. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church, serving in many capacities throughout the years, and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Holy Family Council #4285, the Leon Satkowiak 4th Degree Assembly #0524 and the K of C Honor Guard. Miles “Tom” was a member & Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Mt. Morris, MFDA District 7, the Genesee County Funeral Director’s Association and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served on the Board of Director’s for the International Order of the Golden Rule from 2002 to 2005. Miles “Tom” was a volunteer fireman with the City of Mt. Morris Fire Department for many years as well as with the Kearsley Rescue Squad. Some of his proudest moments as a professional came when he was inducted into the Mt. Morris Hall of Honor with his father-in-law, Wilfred “Bill” Halpin in 1995 and being a charter member of the Education Foundation for Mt. Morris Schools. Throughout his career, he also served his community with involvement in many other organizations. When not busy with work or his family, his favorite pastimes were hunting, especially with his family at Lost Lake Woods Club or Bear Camp, traveling with family, having lunch with friends, and, most importantly, spending time with his granddaughters, Emilie and Lillian. Left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Darnell, children, Adam and wife Jennifer Martin of Mt. Morris, Andrea and husband Frank Kruppa of Ithaca, New York, two granddaughters, Emilie and Lillian, nieces and nephews, Patrick and wife, Cynthia Martin, M. Kelly and wife, Susan Martin, Nicole Greenfield, Thomas and wife, Melissa Martin, Michael Martin and Maria Soriano, Timothy and wife, Lisa Martin and Daniel and wife, Stephanie Martin, and many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Patrick and Michael, and grandson, Miles Alexander.
