Marion Potter

Of Flint, age 96, died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Hyde Park Assisted Living in Flushing. A service celebrating her life will be held at the Miles Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 11:00am with the Rev. John Clair Ferris officiating. Burial will follow at Flint Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00pm until 8:00pm and again on Wednesday from 10:00am until the time of service at 11:00am. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hope United Methodist Church in Flint. Marion Selby Stephens was born at home on the family farm north of Genesee, on June 26, 1912, to Abbie (Hiller) and George Stephens. Her wedding to Joseph Edward Potter of Clarksville, TN, was held at that same farm on June 21, 1934. She graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1929, Flint Junior College in 1931 and attended Central Michigan University. She taught English at the Michigan School for the Deaf for several years before becoming a full time homemaker and parent. Following her husbandAaas retirement from Chevrolet, they enjoyed spending winters in Lady Lake, FL, and visiting family in Tennessee. Mt. Morris Methodist Episcopal Church was her first church home, followed by Bethlehem Methodist, Central United Methodist, and most recently Hope United Methodist, all of Flint. She won her first Bible in a spelling bee and remained a faithful student of the scriptures, attending Bible study classes at West Court Street Church of God for many years. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Lou (Norman) Lathrop of Wooster, OH; a son, Mark (Bonnie) Potter of Mt. Morris; granddaughters, Judith (Robert) Prophet of Jacksonville, FL, and Sara Potter of St. Louis, MO; grandsons Robert (Vicky) Lathrop of Grove City, OH, Stuart Curtis (Linda) Lathrop of Beaufort, SC and Edward Potter (fiancAA Ashley) of Durham, NC; great granddaughters Kayla (Jonathon) Escar of Jacksonville, FL, Whitney (Philip) Swincher and Erin Lathrop of Grove City, OH; great-great grandson Christian Swincher and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, who died September, 13, 1982, an infant son Allen, a sister Marjorie Robinson, and granddaughter Bethany Lathrop.
