Marian was born in Sumpter Twp on April 11, 1929, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest and Minnie (Kile) Mathews. Educated locally, she attended Dye High School and graduated with the Class of 1947. Marian met the love of her life, Robert Smith, and they were united in marriage on November 4, 1950. Sadly, he preceded her in death on June 22, 2009. Marian was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church as well as a Deaconess, sang in the church choir, was a wonderful Sunday School teacher and VBS Volunteer, as well as bowled on the church bowling league for many years. Marian began her career as a lab technician for McDonald Dairy for ten years and then Helped other families raise their children. She was a huge advocate for all kids. Marian loved gardening and had an amazing vegetable and flower garden for as long as she could. She often enjoyed traveling to different states every year and camping all over in Michigan. Marian enjoyed cooking for her family. In her free time, she could often be found working jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, or sudoku puzzles as well as reading. She has read so many books that she wrote inspirational thoughts and quotes of her own. She enjoyed music and playing the piano, she was self-taught. Marian was an amazing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she never missed a birthday card or a Christmas card. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Left to cherish Marian’s memory are her children: Charles and wife, Linda Smith, Judy and husband, Jeff Scott; son-in-law, Jim Frary; five grandchildren: Jason and wife, Lacy, Julie and husband Kevin, Mark and wife, Heidi, Jason and wife Martha, Brad; twelve great-grandchildren: Cole, Jax, Josh, Autumn, Dakota, Miah, Jacobi, Isabella, Alex, Josh, Andy, Emma; special “adopted” daughter, Dena Tanner, and the whole Sather/Tanner family.
