Lyle Ackler

February 19, 1916 — January 27, 2015

Age 98, of Mt. Morris, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at home in Mt. Morris. The funeral service will take place 11:00 am, Friday, January 30, 2015, at the Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tributes in Mt. Morris, with burial to follow in Flint Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by the Gordon R. Bennett VFW Post #1452. Lyle’s family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, from 12:00 Noon until 8:00 pm: Friday, from 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or to the Dementia Foundation. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Lyle was born February 19, 1916, in Ilion, New York, son of Ross and Florece (Woodbeck) Ackler. He married Helen Ellsworth on February 7, 1942. She preceded him in death in November 1975. He married Barbara Mathieson on February 19, 1977. Sadly, she preceded him in death on July 24, 1998. Lyle proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, during the Battle of the Bulge; serving in the 106th Infantry Division “Golden Lions” 806 Ordinance. He was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris, American Legion Post #274 and a lifetime member of VFW Post #3735 in Oscoda, Michigan, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3485 in Mt. Morris. Lyle worked in maintenance and as a metal finisher in Buick for 28 years until his retirement in 1980. He owned and operated Ackler Tree Service from 1944 until 1999, from 1999 until 2011, Lyle assisted in stump removals and selling cut wood. When not working Lyle enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and taking trips to the casino. Left to cherish his memory, four children: Gary (Janice) Ackler, Donna (James) Skinner, Darlene (Francis) Leeck and Norman (Terry) Ackler; 9 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; special friend Dorothy Peters and his cat Patches. Lyle was preceded in death by his parent, first wife Helen, second wife Barbara, brother Harry and his sister Alice. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Compassionate Care, Valley of the Aging and the Veterans Administration for all the loving care.
