Linda was born in Flint on April 8, 1947, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elton and Mae (Nobile) Smith. Upon graduating from Flint Southwestern High School in 1965, Linda proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where she met the love of her life, James Butterfield, at the Great Lakes Naval Station. They were united in marriage on August 1, 1967. After leaving her service in the Navy Hospital Corps, Linda went to work at Michigan Bell Telephone. Just as she had done when she became the first female bagger for Hamady Brothers, Linda charted the course for other women, becoming the first female framer for Bell Telephone in California. Linda was a member of the Mt. Morris Church of Christ, where she was known for her support of missionaries and her service to the church’s older members, particularly by writing letters and sending cards. For over a decade after she retired, she volunteered in McLaren’s Hospital Auxiliary. Although Linda was not able to attend college, she ensured that many other young people did with her generous donations to Rochester University in Rochester Hills, Michigan. When Linda wasn’t serving others, she enjoyed numerous pastimes, including bowling, golf, reading, attending, and watching skating competitions, of which she skated at Skateland and won 3rd place in the International Skating League, and visiting relatives all over the country. Linda was an avid Flint Firebirds Hockey fan and was very passionate about the game. She loved to travel and enjoyed many cruises. She will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish Linda’s memory are her husband, Jim Butterfield; brother, Ron Smith; sisters: Karen (Art) Wynn, and Patricia (Jack) Cheek; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat, Minnie.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents.
