John was born in Flint on July 28, 1959, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce and Bonnie (Brownley) Bennett. Educated locally, John attended Clio High School graduating with the Class of 1977. John met Nancy Mannor when they worked together at Buick City. On December 5, 1981, John married the love of his life at the Genesee United Methodist Church. John worked as a truck driver for Marathon Petroleum until his retirement in 2015. John loved to work with his hands and was great at fixing anything he set his mind to. He preferred to do it himself as he loved to learn new trades and was a very hard worker. At the age of 11, he started a pedal bike business out of his garage and was so successful he sold it to an adult. After selling his business, he took on a paper route with the Flint Journal. John’s family was second to none. He loved them all very dearly and they were the most important people in his life. His love for everything outdoors showed in everything he did. Whether it was camping, hiking, fishing on Secord Lake, kayaking, or backpacking on North Manitou Island. He also enjoyed hunting in Atlanta, Michigan with his son, and working in his yard doing projects to make it look the best. John loved people and enjoyed helping others. This was shown in many ways, but his passion was being a member of the Genesee Lions Club. John enjoyed spending time in the South where it was warm, on or by the water, enjoying campfires with his family, and drinking Coca-Cola. He was also an avid coin collector as sometimes even old bills. John’s granddaughters were his little loves, and he would often sneak Brach’s candy under his pillow to share with them. John loved his dogs and would often sneak them treats and snacks. They went everywhere with him. In his free time, he enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers. John was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
John’s family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude for all the love and support throughout John's journey.
Left to cherish John's memory is his loving wife of 41 years, Nancy Bennett; son, David and wife, Glenn Bennett; granddaughters: Ava, and Sayla; son-in-law, Bryan Otto; sister, Dawn; father-in-law; David Mannor; his beloved dogs: Precious, Prince, and Charlie; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, relatives, and friends.
John was preceded in death by his daughter, Leighsa Otto; parents; mother-in-law, Shelby; brothers: Gary and Cy; sister, Sharon.
