COVID-19 UPDATE: With the recent guidelines limiting the number of people to less than 50 at any gathering, we are asking that you consider other ways to help support family and friends during this difficult time as an alternative to attending a visitation or funeral. Joey “Joe” Allen Simmons, from Michigan, passed peacefully on October 9, 2020, at the age of 57. The service to remember and celebrate Joe’s life will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, October 16, 2020, at Martin Funeral Home in Mt. Morris, with a graveside service following at Flint Memorial Cemetery. The family will be present to receive guests from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any assistance towards the funeral expenses. Expressions of sympathy may be placed on Joe’s tribute page at martinfuneralhome.com. Joe was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on March 9, 1963, to Mr. and Mrs. Billy and Jackie Simmons. He had two siblings: Billy Simmons, II and Rick Simmons. Joe was his high school’s photographer for both yearbook and the paper; he graduated from Mount Morris in 1981 and later married; first to Teri Tew and later to Brenda Frye. Joe had many accomplishments, including holding a master gardener and a master carpenters license, building his parents’ home in Northern Michigan, as well as many other homes, businesses, and a strip mall in the Swartz Creek, MI area (where he encountered a direct hit from a tornado while under construction). He wrote an instructional book on how to make kitchen cabinets while he was an instructor and had a special appreciation for woodworking; always dreaming of opening a kitchen cabinet shop. Joe also supervised the pre-assembling of a complete church offsite and shipped it, piece by piece, to the building site to be assembled. Joe also held EMT Specialty Certification, which included BLS, ACA, EMT, ALS, CCP, and FP in Northern Michigan, alongside North Flight. Joe worked in oil and gas running title, leasing, and many additional endeavors until his passing. He loved tall ships, sailboats, fishing, vacationing in Key West, watching the Detroit Tigers, riding his 2000 Softail Harley, and taking his restored yellow 1986 step side Chevy truck to Silver Lake. Most of all, he enjoyed golfing and spent his summers perfecting his swing. His love for reading even inspired him to write his own book. Joe is survived by his wife: Brenda; children: Joey Simmons II, Patrick (Aimee) Simmons, Halli (Daniel) Bernal, and Matthew (Jerica) Simmons; grandchildren: Samantha, Daren, Peyton, Keith, Caleb, Holli, Kylee, Lauren, and Jack; his parents: Billy and Jacqueline (Curtis) Simmons; brother: Billy (Meridythe) Simmons, Rick Simmons; and many nieces and nephews. Joe's obituary was lovingly written by his wife.
