Gene Milton Sweet

Gene Milton Sweet age 90, passed away December 7, 2024 in Oshkosh, WI. Gene was born in 1933 to William and Edna Sweet in Mt. Morris MI. He graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War being stationed in Germany. After serving his country, Gene completed his electrical apprenticeship spending the majority of his working career with General Motors as an electrician.

Gene married Shirley (Fisher) in 1960. They were married 58 years residing in Flushing, MI. After his retirement, Gene and Shirley spent their winters in Sarasota, FL moving there permanently in 2017. Gene moved to Oshkosh, WI in 2019 to be near his daughter.

Gene was an active member at Flushing VFW Post 5666 serving as quartermaster and post commander. Gene and Shirley never missed a VFW Post party and loved to dance. This continued in Florida as they were active members of their mobile home community. He was also a member of the Masons and Shriners.

Gene was an active man and loved fishing, playing cards, sight seeing, “fixing things” and helping neighbors. He was never idle unless there was a football game on TV. When in Florida, he loved to spend his mornings at the Jetty in Venice, FL fishing off the rocks.

Gene is survived by his daughters Julie (Don) Maslan and Janie (Richie) Smith, grandsons Steven and Thomas (Rheanna) Maslan and Rex Smith. He is a dear uncle to many nieces and nephews and survived by his brother-in laws Ray and Robert Fisher. Gene is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his parents, his brother Bill and his sisters Doris, Ruth and Phyllis.

Visitation will be at Martin Funeral Home, Mt. Morris MI on Monday, December 16, 2024 between 10:00am and noon with the service to follow. The interment will be at Flint Memorial Park, Mt. Morris, MI.
