Of Owosso, died Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at the age of 99. A celebration of her life will take place 3:00 pm, Sunday, August 16, 2016 at the Martin Funeral, Cremation and Tribute Services in Mt. Morris. Reverend Monica M. Villarreal will officiate with cremation to follow. Elsie’s family will be present at the funeral home to receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 pm until the time of service at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church in Flint. Elsie was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1916 in Cloquet, Minnesota the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Carl and Anna (Juntunen) Johnson. Her mother died when she was only six years old, and she and the family would move to Michigan, where her father began working for Buick. She was a graduate of Northern High School in Flint, Class of 1934. Elsie and Newman Louis Beito were united in marriage April 9, 1938 at Salem Lutheran Church. Sadly, he preceded her in death September 18, 1947. Eventually, she would meet George M. Smith and they would be married July 31, 1954. He preceded her in death November 25, 2013. Faith was very important to Elsie as she was member of Salem Lutheran Church in Flint and involved in many activities there. She was an exceptional golfer and bowler, enjoyed arts and crafts and big band music. She will be dearly missed by her family and her church. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Susan Beito Shimmons, Michael and wife, Diane Beito, Gary Smith, SuEllen and husband, Dennis Salim and Melissa and husband, Tom Martin, grandchildren, Christina and husband, Anthony Como, Amy Shimmons, Michele Beito, Matthew Beito, Michael Beito, Jeremy Beito, Sarah Martin and Stephen Martin, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Newman and George, son, Phillip Newman Beito son in law Robert Shimmons and brothers and sisters, Carl Johnson, Ailie Mickelson, Ellen Jones, Clarence Johnson, Walter Johnson, Florence Thomsen, Dorothy Traycik and Jean Thomsen. Elsie was the last of her birth family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nurses and staff at McLaren Hospice and the members of Salem Lutheran Church, especially those at her “table.”
