Elgin was born in Flint, MI and lived in the Clio Area his entire life. He started a family business with his brothers, Citizen Fence. Which he worked and ran for many years before he retired. Elgin overcame so many obstacles in his life from a very young age. Anyone that knew Elgin will remember him as a stubborn troublemaker. Whether it was a kid causing problems, a pain in the butt teenager, or a reckless young adult. He held onto that until the end. He was always getting into something and no matter what he was right, even when he knew he wasn't.
He married his wife, Sue, on October 31, 1964. Sixty years of marriage, three children and numerous grandchildren. The love he has for Sue is one most people dream of. They married and built a life full of laughter, bickering, and love. Elgin leaned on the strength of his wife for the past 60 years. He would always make jokes about their marriage or Sue but if you asked him on a serious level he would tell you that she was the best part of him. He loved her and cared about her in the best way and made us promise that if something happened to him that she would never be alone. He also loved to give her a hard time and drive her crazy more often than not. But if you knew him, you knew that he was the person he was because of the love they shared. When you ask his family what some of the best things about him are you will hear that he was generous, funny, quick witted. His jokes never came when you expected but they always came at the perfect time. He made sure anyone that stepped foot in their home left with a full belly. Elgin cooked for 20 people even when there was only two to feed, he didn't know how to make small portions because he wanted to make sure no one left hungry. He also left a bigger mess than food every time he cooked.
He loved being in the woods, hunting, camping, you name it he loved it. He was so excited when his grandson got a deer, he went right out to his garage and made a mount to put the antlers on. He was as excited for him as he would have been if he got his own. Elgin loved his family. His children and grandchildren were the light of his life. The grandkids knew that if they didn’t know how to do something, Grandpa would. He would take his time to teach them, and pass down all the knowledge he had. He was resourceful and innovative when it came to everything. He was always building or tinkering with something, he never sat down and never stopped going because there was always something to get done. He passed down the true meaning of hard work. His great-grandkids always knew who kept the hotdogs and chocolate. When they were going to "talk to Grandpa" we knew they were coming out with candy, and the kids knew that if they had candy they better bring some to grandpa. He was a very simple person, he didn't require materialistic things, he didn't need to go and buy the new and the best of everything, he just wanted to be able to spend time with the people he loved, make the food he wanted and build when he wanted to build. He would give anyone the last of anything he had if he thought it would help them.
He left an amazing mark on this world, he was proud of his wife, his children and his grandchildren. Even when everyone did stupid things, Elgin’s love didn't waiver. He will be missed daily, and he will live on in his family. If you were lucky enough to know him, just remember the honor that is.
Elgin's obituary was lovingly written by his family.
