Of Vassar, Michigan, age 91, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Cartwright Care Center. The funeral service will take place 11:00 am, Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Vassar Seventh-day Adventist Church in Vassar. Pastor Richard Bullock will officiate with burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Martin Funeral Home-Vassar Chapel on Wednesday, May 16, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. On Thursday, Dr. Elmendorf will be taken to the church, where he will lie in state from 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Vassar SDA Community Services or The Vassar Food Pantry. Envelopes are available at the funeral home and church. Edward was born April 2, 1921 in St. Clair Shores , Michigan the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Alice (Schuett) Elmendorf I. He and Marion Bishop were united in marriage in 1942. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2003. He and Marijane Tupes were united in marriage on September 18, 2005. Dr. Elmendorf served the community of Vassar for 51 years in private practice as a family physican and as a general surgeon. He was an active member of the Vassar Seventh-day Adventist church, where he served as an Elder, Sabbath School Teacher, Organist and a variety of other positions. He enjoyed bird watching, serving his community and spending time with his family at his cabin on Lake Huron. Edward leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Marijane; four children, Edward Neil Elmendorf III M.D. and wife, Cheryl, David Lee Elmendorf Ph.D, Mary K. and husband, Larry Becker and Bobbie Sue Wohlers; two grandchildren, Hilary Elizabeth Leigh and husband, Joel Dickerson with one great grandson on the way and Adam Douglas Becker; brother, Stanley and wife, Dorothy Elmendorf; nieces, Judy and husband, LeRoy Otter, Jan and husband, Tom Lemon and two nephews, Bruce and Robert Elmendorf and many friends and patients. He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Marion Lucille Elmendorf.
